Serengeti Spotlight: When and Where to Catch the Great Migration
Escape to the World’s Most Breathtaking Islands and immerse yourself in paradise.
Tanzania’s diversity isn’t just in its landscapes — it’s in its climate. A single trip might take you from the cool highland mornings of Ngorongoro to the humid heat of Zanzibar’s beaches, with a Kilimanjaro climb somewhere in between. Packing well means thinking in layers and planning for more than one kind of weather, sometimes in the same day.
Safari Packing Essentials (Year-Round) Mornings on safari can be surprisingly cold, especially in open vehicles before sunrise, while afternoons warm up quickly. Pack a lightweight fleece or jacket, a few breathable long-sleeve shirts (useful for sun and insect protection), comfortable trousers, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sturdy closed-toe shoes for walking safaris or camp use. Neutral colors — khaki, olive, beige — are ideal; avoid bright colors and dark blue or black, the latter of which attracts tsetse flies in some regions.
Dry Season (June–October) Expect dust, sun, and cooler nights, particularly in higher-altitude areas like Ngorongoro. Add a warm layer for evenings, a buff or scarf for dusty drives, and a good moisturizer or lip balm for the dry air.
Green/Rainy Season (November–May) Pack a lightweight, packable rain jacket and quick-dry clothing. Waterproof bags or covers for cameras and electronics are worth bringing, along with insect repellent, as humidity rises with the rains.
Kilimanjaro Climbs This is where layering becomes essential. You’ll move through five climate zones, from rainforest heat to arctic summit conditions. A proper packing list includes thermal base layers, a down jacket, waterproof outer shell, sturdy broken-in hiking boots, gloves, a warm hat, and trekking poles. We provide a detailed gear checklist once your climb is booked.
Zanzibar & the Coast Light, breathable clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a sun hat, and a modest cover-up for visiting Stone Town and local villages, where conservative dress is appreciated.
Universal Essentials A good camera, spare batteries or a power bank, a reusable water bottle, any personal medications, and a basic first-aid kit round out any Tanzania packing list, regardless of season.
Whatever combination of safari, summit, and sand your itinerary includes, the golden rule is layers, neutral colors, and a packable rain shell — Tanzania’s weather rewards travelers who come prepared for more than one season at once.
